A year of wonderfulness - 12 January
From the Principal

From the Principal

Dear Pymble family

Thank you for a year of wonderfulness.

Each day with our beautiful girls has felt like a gift. We are grateful for four terms of face-to-face learning – on our main Pymble campus and at Vision Valley – and for the many occasions when we have gathered with you to acknowledge your daughters’ growth and achievements. It has been such a pleasure to welcome parents and carers to our end of year Celebrations of Learning, Chapel services and events, and we look forward to hosting our Junior and Secondary School Speech Days tomorrow. On each occasion, it is hard not to become emotional when reflecting on how grateful I am for a year of togetherness and these opportunities to honour our girls as a united, connected and Pymble proud community.

You may recall we started the year with a challenge to “Get Creative. Dream. Think. Make it happen.” Thanks to this burst of creativity, in 2022 our girls hosted and engaged in a Kindness Convention, Have a Go Expo, research and science conferences, cultural and STEM festivals, community sports events and fundraisers, multiple careers events and future-focussed forums for Junior School through to Senior School, new outdoor education experiences for K-12 including our Year 9 Residential Program and ‘The Great Return’, competitions and performances showcasing a diverse range of talents and abilities, carnivals, service learning activities, cultural experiences and immersions…and the list goes on.

Pymble students have cooked, baked, performed, sewed, served, created, knitted, pedalled, paddled, entertained, engaged with, cared for and supported people of all ages, genders, cultures and backgrounds. All of this has been undertaken with compassion in their hearts and a quiet commitment to making a difference in the lives of others who may not be as privileged as we are.

Aware of our privilege and commitment to College values, our girls have stepped up big time to support each other and the wider community – this is the true magic of Pymble.

So today, I want to say a huge, heartfelt thank you. Thank you to our teachers and staff for who they are, the energy they bring to their work and their passion for coming up with new and creative learning opportunities for our girls. Thank you to our College Board for supporting these innovative ideas and ensuring we have the facilities and means to make each learning experience and outcome the best it can be.

Thank you to our amazing parents and carers who place their trust in us to guide their daughter in her educational journey and support us as active partners in her learning outcomes.

Most of all, thank you to our students for their generous hearts, open minds and willingness to always have a go. Wins and awards are lovely and to be celebrated, especially when you work so hard for them. What makes us just as proud are the students who show up each day determined to be their best self, contribute to school spirit and try something new or challenging – even if it takes them out of their comfort or ‘winning’ zones. We see these students in action every day, and we applaud them for their integrity, courage and persistence. Each student contributes in their own way to make Pymble the phenomenal school it is. ❤️

Now, it’s time to relax and have some fun – especially for our Year 12s, who most likely are letting their hair down after all their hard work in their final year at Pymble. We can’t wait to see you, or hear from you, when results land on December 15!

However you plan to spend Christmas and the holidays, please stay safe and enjoy the opportunity to connect with your loved ones and reflect on your own year of wonderfulness.

Signing off for the year with gratitude, love and this wonderful video message from some of our wonderful girls.

PS We are painfully aware that some families are having trouble getting on to the system to register for co-curricular sport and activities for 2023. Please know our team is working hard behind the scenes to resolve the issue. In the meantime, thank you for your understanding and patience.

From our Chaplains

On behalf of Reverend Bent and myself, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

It has been an incredible year with many achievements to celebrate and performances and competitions to attend and cheer on. There have also been struggles we have shared in grief and illness, however we have done this together as a community.

After a long year, even with all the celebrations we’ve had, ending on a high with the Carols Service last Sunday evening was a great success. I think we are all feeling a little tired and ready for a break.

We want to thank and congratulate Mr Schweinberger, Mrs Colbey, Mr Stafford, Mrs Hare, Mrs Turner, Miss Buckley, Miss Farlow, Mr Kneeshaw, our students and anyone I may have left out for the most incredible evening of Carols. It lifted our spirits and brought joy into our lives. Thank you! We are very fortunate to have such an amazing Music Department here at Pymble.

Reverend Bent and myself hope that you enjoy this very sacred celebration of Christmas, and blessings to our Jewish community members as you celebrate Hanukkah. Whatever it is we might believe, Christmas time is an opportunity to spend time with our loved ones and to communicate to our family and friends that we love them, using the love language of gifts and food (not sure if these are part of the love languages, but they are to most of us).

So, may we take the time to appreciate those we love and to not be overwhelmed by the busyness of this time of the year. May we not lose sight of what is important: those we love!

May God bless you at this time and bless your travels and returns. We wish you a time of rest and play until you return to us safe and well in 2023.

Blessings in Christ.

UPDATED: COVID-19 Response Plans and Advice

UPDATED: COVID-19 Response Plans and Advice

You may be aware that COVID-19 self-isolation rules in NSW have changed.

From 14 October 2022, anyone who tests positive for COVID does not need to self-isolate for a mandated period of time. However, as a school that cares deeply about the health and wellbeing of our wider community, we ask students, staff and families to continue to follow the recommendations of NSW Health and NSW Department of Education, which include:

  • staying at home and taking a COVID test (RAT or PCR) if you have a cough, cold or flu-like symptoms
  • waiting until you feel well and symptoms abate before returning to school
  • wearing a face mask upon your return to school until you are completely symptom-free.

Year 12 students are reminded to follow the guidelines for COVID during the HSC exam period as outlined by out Director of Student Learning (Years 11-12), Mrs Natasha Stanfield.

There will no longer be a dedicated email address for reporting positive cases.

Please use MyPymble as per normal to advise the College if your daughter will be absent from school for any reason, and if she has tested positive to COVID.

To help protect our community, your daughter’s school office will have a supply of masks and RAT kits which will be available for students and families on request. These will also be available in the Boarding House and at Vision Valley for residents and visitors.

Please remind your daughter to remain vigilant about hygiene as we enter this new phase of living with COVID-19. This includes:

  • coughing or sneezing into the crook of your arm
  • disposing of used tissues carefully and thoughtfully
  • washing/sanitising hands before and after eating, and following sneezing, coughing or blowing your nose.

Changes to reinfection period

NSW Health has revised the COVID-19 reinfection period from 12 weeks to four weeks, effective immediately.

This means a person who has previously had COVID-19 will be required to re-test for COVID-19 from 28 days after their last isolation period ended if they experience symptoms. A positive result is regarded as a new case, which must be reported as such, and the person will need to follow the relevant health advice again.

Hand hygiene

  • Sanitiser will continue to be provided at key points around the College.
  • Unmissable new posters have been placed around campus encouraging frequent handwashing.

Any further information or advice for Term 4 will continued to be shared by notifications via the MyPymble app.

From the Junior School

From the Junior School

From our Head of Junior School

As the year comes to a close, I want to say a very heartfelt thank you to each of you for the support and kindness you have shown to our community, our teachers, our Admin team and our Junior School leadership team throughout this very busy year. I feel so lucky to be leading our community with such supportive families – thank you!

Our College Christmas Carols were a lovely way to bring us together and to celebrate our faiths and community. I was so proud of our amazing Junior School musicians and singers who performed with such joy and reverence. A huge thank you to our outstanding Performing Arts team and Mrs Narelle Colby who work so diligently and with such passion in building our girls’ skills and performance confidence.

As the long holidays approach, I would like to encourage the power of BOREDOM! Too often as parents we fear the phrase, ‘I’m bored’. Many times, our immediate response is to offer a device to let our children watch something to distract them or we rush to organise entertainment for them. I know I often did that myself when my daughters were young. I would like to suggest that boredom is actually a powerful opportunity for our girls to explore their creativity, to dream, to create, to reflect and to innovate.

Without the chance to be bored, we may not have the chance to develop our hunger for adventure and novelty. Through being bored your daughter may find a new hobby. Perhaps she may learn to sit quietly and see the wonder in nature and learn the power in being still and ‘present’. Perhaps she may offer to help around your home…anything is possible!

Being bored can also give us the space and time to reflect on our goals and chase those goals with renewed energy and determination.

So, over the summer break I encourage you to let your daughter be bored!  As we come back together in 2023, I look forward to hearing the many wonderful creations and adventures they enjoyed as they shifted their mindset from ‘boredom’ to exploration, wonder and innovation.

This week two lovely Year 4 students, Audrey Lee and Alice Hockley, helped me decorate my office Christmas tree.  Thank you girls for your kindness.

Take care and wherever you may be journeying this summer, travel safely.

Good luck to our amazing Robotics teams who head off to Nationals next week. I’m looking forward to being there cheering you on!

A Message from Nerissa Davey – Deputy Head of Junior School – Operations

And their voices have been heard!

What a wonderful year 2022 has been – an amazing display of the power of student voice. Mrs Kate Brown has explained to new parents the ‘why’ behind the choice of Heidi as a hedgehog as our ambassador for our Junior School, Community of Kindness. For those who don’t already know it’s because hedgehogs are curious little creatures who explore widely, enjoying many adventures – with a tiny voice.

This is exactly what we share with our girls, that even the littlest and quietest voice will be heard in our Junior School. This year we made a bold change as we came together and decided to invite all girls from Year 1-6 to be part of our Junior School leadership through our termly Captain roles, and thus to have a voice. Each year there are a total of 20 roles in each class from Year 1 to 6 to be voted in. This means 600 roles (20 roles x 30 classes) are available for our girls! Talk about power!

Each week our girls deliver notes to Mrs Brown’s post box and they also arrive at their various meetings proudly carrying their SRC boxes and they come ready with suggestions in Kindness Club, Sustainability Club and ICT Club. Our girls have been a part of much change. This year the SRC initiatives we are most proud of are our many Bubble Discos, Buddy Reading, our bird feeders, the amazing bathroom decals, our bottle cap mosaic artwork which is currently being built, scrunchable plastic bins and our movie afternoons.

I am very proud to announce that our SRC girls were the recipients of the 2022 NSW IPSHA Social Justice Commendation Award for the bird feeders we created. Mrs Sally Ruston, Head of Abbotsleigh Junior School and a member of IPSHA’s Board presented our SRC Leaders with their award last week. Our girls even made bird feeders for her to take back to her school to spread the word about kindness to our environment.

The girls have also used their voices this year in the Junior School to bring our communities together. We have organised different opportunities to share our cultures. We had Dragon dances for Chinese New Year, we celebrated Harmony Day proudly wearing our national dress. We learnt about the celebration of Holi in assembly and we enjoyed learning more about Diwali. These are the types of events we wish to see more of in our Junior School so we can continue to break down cultural barriers and celebrate our diverse backgrounds.

Lastly, these past 2 weeks we have seen our Bottle Cap artwork begin to come to life! What an amazing achievement from all girls in K-6, over 8000 bottle caps collected and shaped into what is going to be a memorable and unforgettable reminder or the importance of recycling and being kind. We hope to unveil this artwork in 2023. A huge thank you to Mrs Emily Clutterham, our Creative Arts teacher for her guidance and skill to make this possible, as well as all our Year 6 girls who have spent hours tirelessly gluing caps on.

As the year draws to a close I would like to thank each and every girl in our Junior School for her ideas, her time and her voice to make our Junior School a better place. Looking forward to doing more in 2023!

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Eloise Lawry (Year 5) and her NSW PSSA team on coming second against QLD in the Grand Final for Sports Australia Cricket Championships. Eloise’s team was undefeated in the lead up to the Grand Finals.

Congratulations to Amélie Rahme (Year 4) who competed in Brisbane last week at the Nationals Diving Competition. Amélie had a wonderful experience with divers up to 12 years old in her 3m diving competition. Amélie also competes in the synchronised dive competition. We are so proud of you Amélie and all your hard work and passion for this sport.

Congratulations to Zoe Liang (Year 4) who has won the U/10s NSW Tennis Champion of Champions tournament.

Composing this final Middle School newsletter provides me with a moment to reflect on all that your daughters have achieved across 2022. I would like to acknowledge each and every member of the Middle School community and in turn recognise their capacity to step up and embrace opportunities and challenges across many different fields. The growth and maturity that the team has seen demonstrated over and over again is a tribute to who the girls are as individuals.

Congratulations to Year 7 whose final performance of Postcards from the Dreaming moved the hearts and souls of the audience on Monday. Please enjoy the video below, the final product I promised in an earlier newsletter.

Thank you to the wonderful Middle School Team: Sarah Budd, Gina Ventura, Victoria Harrison, Mariel Lombard, Myvanwy Carr, Stephanie Bennett, Stephanie Sibug, Ruth Volonakis and Amy Bastes whose daily commitment to ensuring your daughter’s experience at Pymble is warm and positive; is a demonstration of their diligence and generosity.

Wishing all of our Middle School families a safe and merry Christmas. We always appreciate working in partnership with you. Farewell to our Year 8 families and all the best for your Upper School journey. It is with gratitude that I acknowledge Myvanwy Carr and Mariel Lombard- our two Heads of Year 8. Your leadership and investment in the girls are exemplary. Please know how appreciated you are by our Middle School community.

Year 7

We can’t believe we are at the end of our first year with our Year 7 group. It has been a year free of lockdowns which has meant things like year group celebrations, excursions and gatherings have been possible. While this has taken some adjustment, Year 7 have risen to the occasion, and we are very proud of them. This was exemplified on Monday’s assembly when the College farewelled Mrs Shaw, who will be moving into a new role.

Our final Year 7 assembly, led by our Middle School leaders Kyraa, Saskia, Tyra and Sophie was an important opportunity to acknowledge how far we have come and how much we have achieved.

It has been a wonderful year for both of us getting to know Year 7 and supporting them through their challenges with new routines, friendship changes and the demands of academic studies. We could not do this without the help of our wonderful Year 7 Compass teachers who care deeply for the girls. Wishing our Year 7 families a happy Christmas and safe, restful holiday. We look forward to welcoming Year 8 2023 next year on Tuesday 31 January.

Year 8

It’s been a busy week for our last week of term. A big thank you to Iris and Ruth who presented the Middle School gift to Mrs Shaw at our Gratitude Assembly on Monday. The girls presented a collection of postcards designed by our Year 7 and 8 students and signed by each of our Compass groups. The theme of the postcards came from the Indigenous composition sung by our Year 7 students called “postcards from the Dreaming”.

This week, we also celebrated our final Year Assembly as a Year 8 cohort. This was an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of our beautiful girls this year, to show gratitude for those who have been a part of the girls’ journey in Middle School and to look forward to what lies ahead.

On this note, it has been a great pleasure for us, Ms Carr and Ms Lombard, to walk with your daughters as they navigated new experiences, challenges and achievements during their time in the Middle School. We are looking forward to joining the girls next year as they transition into the Upper School, and to continue to support their growth and development. We wish all our Year 8 girls and families a safe and enjoyable summer holiday. Our very best wishes for the Christmas celebrations.

Year 8 Thinkers and Ideas class presentation on Epistemology

On 22 November, Mrs Tarrant’s Year 8 ‘Thinkers and Ideas’ class took a trip to the Junior School. The students had written a children’s book on Epistemology and wanted to share their learning with the Year 5 Enquiry class.

In the lead up, the Year 8 students worked studiously to write and design a chapter about one key epistemological concept for the class book. This proved very challenging, to break down extremely complex ideas so that they could be understood by Year 5 students.  However, it enabled the students to consolidate their knowledge and gain a deeper understanding of epistemology, a topic they had covered earlier, in their ‘Thinkers and Ideas’ elective.

To ensure the presentation was engaging and memorable, the Year 8 students brought in a type of food that started with each of the letters in the word ‘epistemology’. The girls had great fun coming up with different foods and ended up with a vast array of alphabet-appropriate options, including eclairs for the letter ‘E’ and lollipops for the letter ‘L’.

The Year 5 students received the Year 8 ‘philosophers’ warmly and listened eagerly as the students read chapters from the class book on Epistemology. The Year 8 students did a stellar job providing answers to the myriad of questions the students had, as they grappled with the lofty ideals of empiricism and rationalism.  It was impressive to see the girls make links with their prior knowledge, from other subjects.

One of the many highlights was hearing one of the Year 5 students express her keenness to study Philosophy in Year 8!  Another was seeing the girls relate so well, despite the difference in ages.

Mrs Tarrant and her Year 8 Thinkers and Ideas students would like to thank the Year 5 Enquiry class and Ms Bird for this rich learning experience.

And just like that, another year ends!

It has been a mammoth few weeks culminating our Year 10s time in the Upper School. I hope you all managed to access and enjoy the Urban Challenge pictures and videos, and we excitedly await the announcement of the winner in a special assembly this Thursday. We wish our Year 10s well as they embark on their new journeys and challenges in the Senior School. Like proud parents, we will be watching from afar and hope they come back to visit us!

For Year 9, they now take over as the custodians of the Upper School and we look forward to watching them grow into the wonderful leaders we know them to be, as we collectively develop our practical wisdom through experience.

This week also signals the end of Michelle Hunt’s time in the Upper School as our Deputy. We are so excited and thrilled for Mich’s promotion to Head of Wellbeing (7-12) but will miss her dearly. Her attention to detail, kind care, thoroughness, and genuine love for your/our girls has been outstanding. Fortunately, she is not going too far, and we look forward to collaborating well into the future.

As we approach the festive season, please encourage your daughters to have a genuine break. They need to switch off, to spend time with loved ones, and recharge their batteries ready for the year ahead. We have packed in a lot in our first post-pandemic year, and they need a rest.

Thank you for your support, understanding and kindness, and best wishes for the holiday season.

A message from Mrs Hunt, Deputy Head of Upper School

Recently I have been reflecting on change. We all know that change is inevitable, rarely easy and begins at the end of your comfort zone! The Upper School has been my comfort zone for many years, and I have loved my role as Deputy Head of Upper School. I cherished the students in our care, the staff who have travelled through with their year levels and the incredible Upper School team. What a privilege to watch our young women grow in confidence, developing lifelong strategies in preparation for the Senior School and adulthood. I am grateful for many experiences such as accompanying Year 10 students on the Leadership Summit in New Delhi, exchange students to Spain and more recently, students on the Drama tour to Paris and London. My involvement in Service initiatives has brought me great joy.

I would like to thank Mr Tom Riley and Mrs Mel Boyd, such professional and capable Heads of Upper School with whom I worked closely over this time and our wonderful Upper School admin team: Mrs Sally Seymour, Mrs Sabine Watts and Mrs Anthea Deschamps. Ms Lamia Rockwell has also been an incredible source of care and wisdom. I have been fortunate to work with many Heads of Years 9 and 10 and look forward to continuing that relationship in 2023 and beyond. I am proud of our Upper School team; we have worked hard to care for our students, we have supported each other, and certainly had some laughs!

To the Upper School parents, thank you for entrusting your daughters to our care. I often remind the students that the hardest job in the world is being a parent! Year 9 and Year 10 can be a challenging time as students mature, forge new friendships, embrace new subjects, and question the world around them. We all know that learning from mistakes is also inevitable. Thank you for working closely with us; I look forward to reconnecting with you in 2023.

Change also brings opportunity and I am looking forward to embracing Head of Wellbeing (Years 7 -12) and working closely with Mr Justin Raymond to implement an exciting Wellbeing vision. Additionally, I am delighted that in 2023 I will have the privilege to work alongside the wider Years 7 to 12 Wellbeing team.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas, a safe holiday and look forward to seeing everyone refreshed and ready for an exciting 2023.

A message from Mr Levin and Mrs Richter, Heads of Year 9

Congratulations to all students on finishing Year 9 with a flourish of activities. A huge congratulations to all students for every achievement during 2022. We are very proud of Year 9 students for their energy, curiosity, and for their uniqueness. Please take the time during the holidays to reflect with your daughter on all the goals that they have achieved this year and consider what they would like to achieve in all areas of their life: academically, in co-curricular, performing arts and sporting pursuits.

The Yarning Circle officially opened last Thursday. A yarning is an opportunity to broaden non-indigenous students’ knowledge and strengthen indigenous students’ connections in a culturally safe environment. Having this garden open made me feel more comfortable sharing my culture with my peers. I believe it is important for non-indigenous students to learn about other people’s cultures, and having them learn about mine made me feel very special. I hope that this experience contributes to a more diverse and inclusive culture. It feels special to explore mine in particular as a multicultural school community. I hope Pymble continues to take on more initiatives like this in the future.

Written by Dezi Magann-Jones (Year 9)

What a privilege to attend the historic day for our First Nations students last week. Year 9 were invited to attend the official opening of our First Nations Garden and Yarning Circle. We entered this tranquil space and were welcomed to country with a smoking ceremony from local Indigenous Elder Uncle Neil. We were fortunate to hear the story of the emu from Uncle Neil and why the garden is shaped like an emu. The beautiful Dinawan Dance (emu dance) was performed by our own Pymble Song Ladies and First Nations Dance group. This was a lovely way for all Year 9 students to learn about First Nations Culture, acknowledge their stories and experience, and reflect on how we can all work towards a reconciled future.

Year 9 PASS students were fortunate to end the year with an excursion to Palm Beach to learn how to surf. As part of the PASS course, students have explored Australia’s Sporting Identity. Students investigated factors that contributed to how Australia is perceived as a sporting nation and gained an appreciation for how Australia’s beaches have led to the growth of water sports including swimming and surfing. Students participated in a practical surfing session conducted by Manly Surf School where they learnt essential surf safety skills and surfing techniques.

Wishing all students and families a wonderful break with cherished time with your loved ones. Many thanks for your support throughout 2022. We look forward to greeting the students as Year 10 in 2023.

A message from Ms Beaumont and Ms Attley, Heads of Year 10

Congratulations to our wonderful Year 10 students on finishing up in the Upper School, we’ve had a busy end of year with a range of activities designed to farewell them into Senior School and honour their time in the Upper School. Over the last week we had service-learning day, Urban Challenge, Gratitude assembly, walk for Cassius Turvey and our last Upper School Assembly where we gave thanks to everyone who has supported them this year. As the year ends, we are very thankful to Year 10 and the growth they have undertaken to be capable and kind young women ready for Senior School.

It was great to spend time learning, reflecting and giving back to those in need last Thursday. Our Year 10 Service Day meant that the year group was split in half with one half externally visiting ‘Cook for good’ cooking and learning about the homeless and the other half at school completing a range of Charity initiatives (packing birthing kits, knit for love and Days for Girls initiatives). The feedback from the organisations was overwhelmingly positive with volunteers inspired by our student’s ability to think deeply and get on with tasks with no fuss.

Urban Challenge as one student put it ‘was the best day of the year’ with a range of clues and fun activities organised around the city. The dress ups were fabulous, and the teachers had just as much (if not more) fun as the girls figuring out the clues and working with their teams to score the most points. The year group really showcased their competitive side, but this was complemented very well by the strong teamwork and relational skills developed on the day.

Week 8 is all about gratitude and we have enjoyed a range of assemblies to thank those around us. We also want to share our thanks to you our supportive parent body for going out of your way (in every way) to support our wellbeing initiatives and programs here at school. We hope you enjoy a wonderful holiday period with close family and friends, and we look forward to welcoming you and your daughters back in 2023 as proud year 11 students.

This last newsletter item brings many congratulations to all our new Year 12 students who have started their final school year so strongly. As a Year group, they demonstrate a strong sense of responsibility and respect for each other, the College and themselves. I would like all students to reflect on the significant growth they have shown this year, academically, socially and personally. It would be a great conversation at home to chat with your daughter about this and reflect together on the determination, enthusiasm and care shown.

This week we acknowledged our new student leaders who will represent their year group across of areas in the College. We also presented the Term 4 Jacaranda Awards. These are very special awards presented to those who consistently live the College values. It is always such a positive presentation, as the Year group cheer and celebrate these students.

Congratulations to all House Leaders and Year 12 students involved in running and leading the House Competition held earlier this week. The enthusiasm and great sense of fun were infectious and it was a wonderful way to spend the afternoon – watching all the dance moves, great singing and huge smiles.

It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge Mrs Melissa Boyd, as she leaves to take up her new role as Deputy Principal at MLC. I know she worked closely with many of your daughters in Upper School and she has continued to support and care for the Senior School community over the past few years. We all wish her well and know she will do a tremendous job.

Looking forward to 2023

With 2023 just around the corner, our planning of future community events has well and truly begun.
We are excited to be hosting an event celebrating the Dragonboat Festival in 2023.
We warmly invite the entire College community (siblings included) to celebrate our cultural diversity on June 22 at King Dynasty Restaurant, Chatswood with a banquet feast and plenty of activities for kids.
We’d also like to announce the dates of some of the most-anticipated yearly events at the College for early 2023:
• Icebreaker: Friday 24 February. This is a great opportunity for parents and carers to come together in early Term 1 to reconnect in a social setting.
• New Parent High Tea: Friday 24 March. This is a valuable opportunity to meet fellow parents and carers at the College in order to begin to forge friendships within their cohort. Further details for both events will soon be made available. All new parents and all Year 7 parents are invited to this fun event.

Finally, on behalf of the whole Senior School team, my very best wishes to all Senior School families for a very safe and happy Christmas break. If you are on the move, safe travels. Thank you so much for the support you have shown us – we look forward to a very positive and exciting 2023.

From the Boarding School

From the Boarding School

From our Head of Boarding

It has been a whirlwind of a term and one filled with the joy and camaraderie that is the hallmark of our Boarding family. As you will see from the photos below, our Christmas celebration on Tuesday was evidence of the special bonds that exist in our Boarding family.

Thanks from our Boarding Prefect Team

As part of our Christmas celebrations our Prefect team gave a beautiful thank you speech. They did a wonderful job and I thought it was appropriate to share their gratitude here as another way to acknowledge our wonderful Pymble team:

Girls as we know, Christmas time is not only just for receiving presents but it is also a time to give back and say thank you. There are so many people that contribute to boarding life every day to make sure that our boarding experience is to the best it can be. Although I’m sure these people are aware of how grateful we are, we thought it would be appropriate to really say thank you to each group of people in our boarding community and to make sure no one goes unnoticed.

On behalf of everyone in the boarding community we would like to say thank you to all of our Boarding staff. Our Heads of Year, Anne, Kate, Holly, Beth and Mardi, you do so much for all the Boarders in all houses. You are our ‘go to people’ and without you guys the houses wouldn’t run nearly as smoothly as they do now and we are forever grateful for all you do.

We would also like to thank our Assistant Heads of Year, Sophia, Taryn, Pari, Catherine, Jaimee and Nicky for being there for all of us this year. We have loved to get to know you as many of you guys were new additions this year. We are all very grateful for what you do and cannot wait for the year to come.

Finally we would like to thank all of our casual staff. You guys are always there to help around the house. I would just like to say thank you for all you have done for us throughout the year, it definitely doesn’t go unnoticed.

Miss Howie and Miss Kiddle, thank you so much for your endless support, we are so grateful to have the both of you constantly supporting us in all aspects of school life, you both are such a great support team, and all your hard work, dedication and support behind the scenes does not go unnoticed. We are all extremely grateful to have the both of you. We wanted to let you both know that you are deeply appreciated and loved in our boarding community, always making us feel safe and supported. Thank you again, you are both the best.

To our Day School Heads of Year, thank you all for your endless support of our Boarding community, we are greatly thankful for your love and kindness, we appreciate your understanding and sacrifices you make to make our day school experience the best it can be, your hard work doesn’t go unnoticed.

To the Facilities team thank you for making our Pymble a home like no other. You always are there to give us a helping hand when we need things done and allow us to have so many opportunities for our Pymble Boarding family. We definitely appreciate what you do for us and hope you enjoy a restful break.

For us Boarders, most of us don’t get to go home and back to the comfort of our own beds when we’re sick. But, thanks to the amazing Healthcare team, we are still so lucky to have amazing care and facilities provided to us when we need that extra bit of care. So we wanted to say a big thank you to Lauren and the Healthcare team for always making sure that the health of our girls is looked after

We can definitely account for all of the girls here that one of the highlights of all of our days is walking into the dining hall at recess or lunch and seeing Gary and the other kitchen staff with big smiles from ear to ear. The effort and care you all put into making sure that our meals are not only delicious but also nutritious is something I’m sure that everyone is grateful for. So to the catering team and Mr Speechly, thank you so much for the insane amount of work you put in for us Boarders, your work doesn’t go unnoticed… especially when there’s Oreo ice cream.

To the cleaning team, I know your job is not easy, so we genuinely cannot thank you enough for the time and effort you put in every day when making sure our homes are tidy and clean. So on behalf of the Boarding community, we would like to thank the cleaning team and Mr Davidson for all your hard work and dedication you put forward for us.

To our lovely School Office ladies. We can’t thank you enough for the endless support you provide to us on the daily basis. The constant reminders to sign in and out of our free periods and when you check up on us when we need us most never goes unnoticed. Your constant smiles and engaging chats keeps us going throughout the day. We thank you for all of the behind the scenes work you put into the College and most importantly our Boarders. There are simply no words to describe you all except, determined, hard working and most importantly caring.

Miss Rockwell, throughout many the years of your involvement in boarding you have been nothing but supporting and the one who gets the job done, if it weren’t for you we wouldn’t be lucky enough to have all things that we have been privileged to be given. Your input to the community has never gone unnoticed and we will forever be grateful for everything you have done for us.

Mr Raymond, you’ve been the backbone of our Day school life, your input to education needs and facilities have been deeply appreciated. We give you thanks for keeping us motivated, happy and encouraging us to our best even when we kind find the grit and determination on some days. You inspire every one of us to strive for the highest and lead with great privilege.

Mr Stewart, where would we be without you? From early in the morning and late at night you’ve always been just around the corner to give our Boarding community a helping hand. All that you’ve done for us for the past years has been nothing but cherished and we are truly grateful for your presence within our tight knit community.

To our incredible Revs. You are our neighbours, our advisors and the backbone of our family. Thank you for always being there, for your acceptance, kindness and compassion. We are deeply indebted to you.

To Dr H and Mrs Shaw, we honestly have no words to express how grateful and appreciative we all are of what you’ve done for throughout your time here at Pymble. One thing is for sure, you both represent what the College stands for of which is pride, you show pride through the education, sporting, and the arts  aspects of the community. You motivate and inspire us to do our best every day.  We’re forever grateful to have you leading our school and being the face of this beautiful college. Boarding definitely wouldn’t be the same without you.

Dr H, we couldn’t think of a better role model than you, you’re a leader through and through with innovative and creative skills under and outside the school categories. And Mrs Shaw, although you’re stepping down from Deputy Head of the College your vibrant smile and determination will forever be present for years to come. Please keep smiling and never change, we love you both just the way you are.

Laurel and Heather, we must say you guys are pretty awesome. You guys have done and do so much for our Boarding community. You help us with our crazy requests, like needing your key to get the laptop chargers, PE uniforms and textbooks we’ve forgotten. You both have amazing personalities and your big smile improves everyone’s day.

Mrs White, you are a real rockstar. Of course, you are a busy woman but we know (and hope) you do it out of love for us Boarders. You also take time out of your busy day to genuinely check in with each and every one of us. Whether you realise it or not, you have such an impact in the little things you say and do to support us individually, which makes a big difference to boarding over all. From the bottom of all our hearts thank you Mrs White.

Mrs B – the woman, the myth, the legend. There is too much we could say honestly, so we will just say this. You know our families, our home towns, but most importantly you know us. Despite the million things you do in your day, you never lose sight of us Boarders as individuals, by knowing what we’re up to and always checking in. I hope you know how much we appreciate you, so lots of love and merry Christmas from all of us.

The Margaret Brooke ‘Brooksie’ Award

Congratulations to Georgina Pechan of Year 12 who is our Term 4 Brooksie recipient. Georgina is an integral part of our Boarding family who brings joy and sunshine with her wherever she goes. She is kind, generous and compassionate – consistently willing to lend a helping hand around the house or with her peers in various tasks – and always makes people feel loved by offering to make them a cup of tea.

Georgina is diligent and hardworking, has an extraordinary gift of creativity, checks in with the people around her, and has a remarkable ability to make her Boarding sisters feel listened to and cared for. Her warm personality never fails to make you smile, and her joy is infectious and always brightens the room. Georgina could not be more deserving of being presented with the Brooksie Award – we are so glad to have her part of our Boarding family!

Saturday 19 November

On Saturday 19 November we combined our Pymble 1 and 2 teams. Our players were excited to play with some new faces. A rejuvenated new look Pymble team took to the field against North Sydney.

North Sydney batted first scoring a total of 89 runs. Special mentions to Sophie Webster (Year 7), Brielle McDonald (Year 7) and Amelia Watson (Year 7) who were instrumental in disarming the North Sydney batting line up. With the bat in hand special mentions to Sophie Webster who retired not out on 33 runs and Phoebe Cooper (Year 9) with 16 runs.

Pymble were able to chase down the total with eight overs to spare! This is the team’s first win and a well-deserved one at that. Congratulations girls!

Saturday 26 November

Pymble 1 and 2 were able to combine again on Saturday against Litchfield North Sydney. Our cricketers were fierce in their bowling attack cutting off many quick singles and suffocating the opposition run score. Special mentions to Charlotte Carruthers (Year 8) and Brielle McDonald (Year 7) who were lethal with their bowling.

After 20 overs the Pymble team restricted North Sydney to 53 runs. Our Pymble cricketers all managed to score runs whilst batting which was an amazing effort. Top scorers were Sophie Webster (Year 7), Darcey Hawkins (Year 9) and Abani Dhaliwal (Year 7). Pymble were able to secure their second win of the season after reaching the opposition’s total in 7 hours!

An amazing effort over the last fortnight from our Pymble cricketers and I look forward to seeing them back out on the pitch in Term 1!

DIVER Levels and Grading Night Friday 18 November

After a three-year hiatus, on Friday 18 November all divers participated in the DIVER Levels Grading night.

This program provides divers with a sustainable and rewarding levels system that allows skill development, clear goal setting, forward progression, and acknowledgment of individual success, throughout school diving from entry level to end point.

It was an exciting night watching divers from Little Rippers, Pathways, VFD and Competitive, twist, turn and somersault through a range of different skills to qualify for their Level D, I, V, E or R – DIVER certificates.

Well done to all divers who participated in this fun night, received certificates and prizes, and tried out some new skills. We look forward to our next DIVER night in Term 1 2023.

Junior School Swimming Carnival

On Thursday 17 November 2022, Junior School competed in our annual Swimming Carnival. The carnival was modified to be compliant with the attendance guidelines of the aquatic centre. As a result, we ran the carnival over four sessions; Championship events and Year based Races and Race League Events.

Championship Events

During PE lessons at the end of last term, the girls competed in swimming trials. We used this data, along with times submitted on NSW Swimming Central data base to then invite the top girls from each event to participate in Championship Heats.

Race League Events

Girls competed in teams for their house in several different races, novelty events and relays. The activities catered for all swimming abilities with emphasis being fun, participation and house spirit.

2022 Pymble Christmas Mini Meet

The vibe around Christmas is very different from any other time of year. There is just something about Christmas that makes us look forward to the month of December.

Here at Pymble it is no different. Yesterday afternoon we ran our annual Xmas Mini Meet to celebrate Christmas and the end of another great year.

The Xmas Mini Meet was a huge success with over 140 swimmers participating from Tiger sharks, Mini squad, Star squad and Cadet squad. Pride and Engine squads did an awesome job in running and getting involved in the Race League, keeping the spirits high and making all the first timers feel at ease.

There was a visit from Santa which sent the swimmers into a frenzy as Santa had lollies for everyone – who doesn’t love Santa! A barbecue was run extremely well by our senior swimmers, with everyone receiving a sausage sizzle. It was a fantastic afternoon with so much excitement, fun and Christmas cheer.

Team of the Week

This week’s Team of the Week goes to our legends in Pymble 3. Their only loss of the season came in their semi-final match. Here’s what captain Isabella Chen (Year 9), had to say about their bronze medal match:

“The first thing I would like to say is that I am extremely proud of our team! Everyone played fantastically and despite not making it into finals, the team played well during our Bronze match on Saturday. Although we were a bit out of it during the first set, we reset in the second, played our best and took back that set. Our serving was a lot better in the second and third set, and eventually we played our game and focused. I have to say that even though we couldn’t control the weather, the wind definitely impacted our performance that day and made it more difficult to predict where the ball was going. We were all super excited to receive our Bronze medal and had an amazing time. Great job everyone!”

Results Breakdown

Pymble 1 won their grand-final against Danebank to become the first Pymble team to ever win the Opens Division 1 bracket.

Pymble 2 won their final game of the season ending the season undefeated! We are currently waiting on final confirmation, but this result should put our girls in first place in the Opens Division 2 bracket, as their competition was “first past the post.”

Pymble 3 won their bronze medal match against St. Scholastica’s College in the Year 9 Division 1 bracket.

Pymble 5 won their grand-final against Monte Sant’ Angelo, taking out gold in the Year 9 Division 3 bracket. They completed the season undefeated!

Pymble 6 won their bronze medal match against PLC Sydney, in the Year 7 Division 1 bracket. They won this game 3 to 0 in dominant fashion, after only just beating the same team two weeks prior, 2 to 1.

Final report from our Volleyball Captain Emma Sargeant

This weekend, seven of our Pymble Volleyball teams competed in the final round of the Santa Sabina competition, with many teams fighting for a medal. We had some outstanding results from many teams, with five out of seven teams receiving a medal. It was an incredibly successful weekend for Pymble.

Pymble 1 – Opens Division 1 Grand Final Champions

Pymble 2 – Opens Division 2 Grand Final Champions

Pymble 3 – Year 9 Division 1 Bronze Medallists

Pymble 5 – Year 9 Division 3 Grand Final Champions

Pymble 6 – Year 7 Division 1 Bronze Medallists

The girls have worked tirelessly this term developing their fundamentals and learning to work together as a team. These achievements are well deserved. Well done to all the girls who competed, it has been a super successful season for all teams and players. Also, a huge thank you to our coaches Sheilah, Brian, Maddy, Vee, and Yung, and our co-ordinator Mr Wood for their endless support this season.

Performing Arts

Performing Arts

As we move towards the end of the year, I wanted to recognise and celebrate the significant achievements wrought by students and their teachers in all of the Performing Arts areas; Music, Dance, Language Arts and Drama.

Whilst the final showcases in these areas were magnificent in the scope of their achievements, it is important to also celebrate the many hours of rehearsals and commitment of time by students and their teachers to bring these performance events to fruition.

As Shakespeare noted through the role of Cressida, “Things won are done. Joy’s soul lies in the doing”.

Students involved in the Performing Arts at Pymble have emerged gallantly and triumphantly from the daunting grip of COVID in 2022.  Next year will bring performance work across the four areas of Music, Drama, Dance and Language Arts that will be profoundly enhanced by what has been confined and now has been liberated.

Wishing you a restful and joyous Christmas and New Year

Robotics

Robotics

It’s been a bumper two weeks for robotics with four competitions. Pymble have qualified more teams into a range of National competitions, a massive effort and a reward for their dedication and hard work across. Unfortunately, not all teams can make Nationals; however, the 2023 build season has been our best yet, with quality robots produced by all teams across all programs.

Year 9 to 12 FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) Sydney Regional

Pymble Ladies’ College hosted the FIRST Tech Challenge Regional last weekend in the Junior School. Five Pymble teams competed with four making it to Nationals.

The FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) a highly technical competition where students are first introduced into the world of CAD and coding in JAVA. It is a rewarding jump from VEX systems in Year 7 and 8 (where students use prefabricated parts) to FTC where they design and build the parts themselves.

Our Year 9 students made this brave jump to FTC, proving the power of believing in yourself, being persistent, and using every moment available during a robotics session to learn and improve pays dividend. Consequently, these Year 9 girls have been an integral part of our best FTC season ever achieving more than our mentors could hope for.

Four Pymble teams made the playoffs, with an all-Pymble team making the grand-final: 18362 Shark Sub, 18359 Robo Ducks, 12554 Double Shot Expresso.

In the grand-final, against a Barker and Wollongong Alliance, Pymble posted their best scores against the most competitive robots in Australia and were close to winning one their matches. An amazing effort by our rookie teams. They finished 2nd place overall in the Tournament, our best result ever in this competition.

Four of the twelve teams that qualified for Nationals, were Pymble teams.

Please congratulate these teams and their achievements:

12554 Double Shot Expresso (Finalist Alliance Award and Qualifications for Nationals) – Amelie Muir (Year 10) Jasmine Li (Year 10) Sabrina Rolinek (Year 10) Grace Ho Ollisha Muthukada (Year 9) Allison Wang (Year 9)

18359 – Robo Ducks (Qualification for Nationals) – Mulan Xu (Year 10) Rachel Chan (Year 10) Aria Patel (Year 9) Thinara Siriniwasa (Year 9) Katrina Lin (Year 9) Charlotte Ford (Year 9) Isabella Xu (Year 9)

18360 Definitely NOT the Geese – Sophie Wang (Year 10) Emma Eaton (Year 10) Olivia Clifford (Year 10) Samantha He (Year 9) Jessica Wang (Year 9) Lisa Wang (Year 9)

18363 Pandora’s Box (Finalist Alliance Award and Qualifications for Nationals) – Maya Garg (Year 9) Sophia Chang (Year 9)  Teresa Sun (Year 9)  Annie Wanrong Luo (Year 9)  Ariana Bansal (Year 9)  Emma Du (Year 9)  Vicky Hu

18362 Shark Sub (Finalist Alliance Award and Qualifications for Nationals) – Ang-ya Koo (Year 9) Rachel Moon (Year 9) Ashley Chow (Year 9) Isabella Nyguen (Year 9) (Year 9) Ann Kyle (Year 9) Sophia Chen (Year 9) Ayana Sapra (Year 9)

Year 5 and 6 VEX IQ Skills only Tournament and Tournament 2

Three Year 5 and 6 teams competed with Knox Grammar School in a remote tournament. All teams posted their highest scores on the worldwide rankings. This was completed at Pymble, with the teams consisting of:

6510F VEX Koalas (Valerie Zhao Year 6, Nicole Fan Year 6, Chloe Shao Year 6, Elaine Zhang Year 6)

6510H Bobot (Kathy Wang Year 6, Yuecheng Xu Year 6) qualifying for Nationals.

Later that week, all our VEX IQ teams competed at Barker for the second Qualifying Tournament. Using the weeks preceding this competition to improve their robot.

6510J UHB (Kiara Excel Year 5 Oriana Fenton Year 5) posted some great programming scores, venturing into the top five for the start of the competition.

Teams 6510B (Sophia Wong Year 5, Audrey Wyldhill Year 5, Olivia Chan Year 5), and

6510N (Angela Mao Year 5, Jing Yuan Liu Year 5, Selina Jiang Year 5, Arianna Ng Year 5, Jennifer Xu Year 5, Sophia Felizzi Year 5) qualified for the finals for the first time; a great achievement for teams in their rookie years.

6510C VEX Vegetables (Lily Xing Year 6, Scarlett Wong Year 6) – despite a valiant effort to build a whole new robot unfortunately had to compete with their ‘old’ robot, posting their best scores and making finals.

6510M Pymble Tinkers (Sophie Kidd Year 6, Annabella Bayfield Year 6) also made improvements to their robot and team to deservedly win the Design Award and qualify for Nationals.

Congratulations to these teams for winning awards and qualifying for Nationals:

6510M Pymble Tinkers (Sophie Kidd Year 6, Annabella Bayfield Year 6) – Design Award and National Qualification

6510F VEX Koalas (Valerie Zhao Year 6, Nicole Fan Year 6, Chloe Shao Year 6, Elaine Zhang Year 6 – Build Award

Year 7 and 8 VEX Robotics Competition and Tournament 2

Fourteen Pymble Teams entered the second VEX Robotics Competition at Barker College. Despite achieving a lower result than the previous competition; Pymble’s robots were stronger, and some ill luck made qualification for the finals more difficult. Nonetheless, all teams competed with pride and determination and posted their best score of the season with six teams making the final rounds.

65100C Pymble Primos continued their amazing season and won the Excellence award, the highest honour at a competition. 651000M Defenestration, with so much determination managed to win the Amaze Award and eventually received a Nationals qualification; a deserved award considering their robot was damaged days earlier through no fault of their own. 65100J Spanish Luigis  won the Judges Award, for their team work, attitude and impressive composure.

Please congratulate these achievements:

65100C Pymble Primos – Abani Dhaliwal (Year 7), Alice Mao (Year 7), Annabelle Li (Year 7), Kitty He (Year 7) – Excellence Award

65100J Spanish Luigis – Jessica Xu (Year 8), Jessica Zhai (Year 8), Jocelyn Ying (Year 8), Meimei Jiang (Year 8) – Judges Award

Future You Festival

Our signature Future You Festival was held in Week 7 and was designed to give the girls an opportunity to develop deeper self-awareness skills to perform interviews and opportunities to explore various industries.

This year, we teamed up with Upper School to deliver a week of Future You activities starting with two days of future-focused workshops and activities to help students prepare their thinking for post-school pathways.

On day 1, Kathryn Taylor from Turning Point Consulting presented in a workshop the meaning behind their motivational maps helping the girls understand how they are energised. Day 1 provided the opportunity to explore various interactive workshops led by academics and student ambassadors from UTS, UNSW, UTAS, Newcastle, ACU and University of Sydney. The students had an additional workshop from Kathryn Taylor on how to prepare for an interview. This was built on in self-paced online workshops.

On day 2, students listened to the career journey of four Pymble staff members and expert advice from HR experts from Commonwealth Bank, Coca Cola and Manpower Company. The two days concluded with all students receiving a mock interview from alumni and staff members.

Upcoming Events – enjoy your holiday!

As the 2022 school year comes to a close, the Community Engagement team would like to wish everyone in the Pymble community a safe and restful break as well as a festive holiday season. We hope to publish the 2023 Community Events calendar on MyPymble before the end of the year, which will be packed full of enjoyable events including all the traditional favourites and some exciting new ones, too!

The Magazine 2021

We have just had delivery of The Magazine 2021, written by students at Pymble to reflect the year that was. The yearly magazine provides an overview of the events, activities and achievements of girls from Kindergarten to Year 12. The printed is available at school offices now and a digital version is also available by clicking here.

Speech Days

We look forward to welcoming parents and carers onto campus tomorrow to celebrate the achievements of all of our girls and farewell the 2022 school year.

We are expecting a large number of parents on campus, so to guarantee that you are on time and secure good seating in the gymnasium, we strongly encourage parents catch the train to Pymble Station from where the College is only a short five-minute walk away.

For those who choose to drive, parking will be available in Centenary Car Park (entry via Gate 3) as well as 150 additional spots on James Kelso Field (entry via Gate 1).

Please note, however, that local traffic will be very busy, street parking will be extremely limited and it may take quite a while to find a parking spot within the College grounds.

College Christmas Celebration

A huge thank you to all involved in Sunday’s Christmas Celebration, particularly the Pymble Parent Association (PPA) for the delicious barbecue and slushies. Not even a thunderstorm could dampen the Christmas spirit on display and it was wonderful to see the community come together to bring in the festive season. A big thank you must also go to Santa, who was almost as popular as the slushies!

Looking forward to 2023

With 2023 just around the corner, our planning of future community events has well and truly begun. After reading the recent Community Engagement Event survey results that showed support for more cultural events, we are excited to offer an event celebrating the Dragonboat Festival in 2023.

We warmly invite the entire College community (siblings included) to celebrate our cultural diversity on June 22 at King Dynasty Restaurant, Chatswood with a banquet feast and plenty of activities for kids.

In 2024, we will be holding a similar cultural event, however this time celebrating Diwali. While we would like to include an all-parent cultural celebration for every culture every year, our busy school calendar means that we will select a different cultural event each year to complement our existing celebrations like our College Christmas Carols and other student-based cultural events during the year.

We look forward to your safe return in 2023!
